On 20th January, Dow Jones reported that a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, Inc. said it will permanently shutter its hog-processing and fresh-meat-fabrication plant in Sioux City, Iowa, as its pork business continues to struggle. The plant closure, which will happen April 20, will affect about 1,450 hourly and salaried employees at John Morrell & Co.
n 28th January, Smithfield Foods, Inc. announced that it completed the sale of its hog production operations located in Texhoma, Oklahoma to Prestage Farms, Inc. Specific terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The Texhoma operations house 20,000 sows and contain 71,000 nursery and 172,000 finishing spaces.
