    Hi

Is painting a “language”? Don’t think so! This is kind of interesting painting by the look of the images on the site: look at how you discuss you painting and compare this with how you have learned language and how this process has continued. Sorry if this sounds patronising – any chance I could use your images in my own work?!

    Best Regards

      Dear Ian,
This is not our point of view but it is Tom Preston’ s Interview to Antonio Santin. These are the painter´s words.
Anyway, Aristotle points out in his work of art “Poetics” (“Poetics” has to be understood not as contemporary “Poetry” but as “Literature” in general) that Literature is a representation and reflection of reality” ( Aristotelic mimesis). The writer does not create his work in a vacuum but he imitates reality. This can be apply to all human disciplines, including painting.
How can a child learn to speak? By imitating the sounds he hears.
Of course, this is only our particular point of view…
      Nice regards.

ART FARM

Wim Delvoye (born 1965 in Wervik, West Flanders) is a Belgian neo-conceptual artist known for his inventive and often shocking projects. Much of his work is focused on the body. He repeatedly links the attractive with the repulsive, creating work that holds within it inherent contradictions- one does not know whether to stare, be seduced, or to look away.

ART FARM EXHIBITION

Though Delvoye started tattooing pig skins taken from slaughterhouses in the United States in 1992, he began to tattoo live pigs in 1997. Delvoye was interested in the idea that “the pig would literally grow in value,” [7] both in a physical and economic sense. He ultimately moved the operation to an Art Farm in China in 2004 where restrictions regarding animal welfare were less strict. The pigs have been inked with a diverse array of designs, including the trival, such as sculls and crosses, to Louis Vuitton designs, to designs dictated by the pig’s anatomy. The designs are created by Delvoye and his three colleagues in residence.”[8] In an interview with ArtAsiaPacific’s Paul Laster, Delvoye described the process of tattooing a live pig,”we sedate it, shave it and apply Vaseline to its skin.””[9] As another manifestation of contradiction in Delvoye’s art, he owns a pig farm though he is a practicing vegetarian.

ART FARM PHOTOGRAPHS

The Belgian artist Wim Delvoye creates his stuffed tattooed pigs. At the Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin on Rue de Turenne one can also watch a video about Delvoye’s Art Farm in China, where the tattoos are done. It’s hard to tell from the image on the left, but the pigs are tattooed with the logos of luxury goods, Disney characters, etc.

FIRST EUROPEAN DEBONING CHAMPIONSHIPS

FIRST EUROPEAN DEBONING CHAMPIONSHIPS

On August 29th last year, the 1st European Deboning Championship was held in Reddha-Wiedenbrück (Germany).  All butchery employees of the European meat industry were invited to participate.  As with the German Deboning Championship, the event was initiated by Tönnies Fleisch and Friedr. Dick..
The non-profit association “Aktion Kinderträume”, which has been founded on the occasion of the 1st German Deboning Championships, is also organizer of the European Deboning Championships. The association meanwhile counts 176 members – mostly characters and companies from the meat industry and their suppliers. Membership fees and revenues from fundraising events, i.e. the Blau-Weissen-Nacht and the European Deboning Championships are used to financially support child relief projects, especially children’s hospices here in Germany and abroad.
The object is to get the interest all workers employed in the meat industry in the areas of Butcher Industry or Craftsmanship and to find the best. Thus, high standards of hygiene, exacting conditions and technical skills can be demonstrated. In addition to this, the championship will improve the image of the whole meat industry and display hygiene standards and the skills of butchery workers.
Europe’s best of the best of the deboning sector, from piece-worker to craftsman, everybody came together for this occasion.

Inside the tent, many discussions among the participants from all over Europe were held and when there was no other possibility, the participants communicated with their hands and feet.

The winners were determined around 5 p.m. and were honored by Clemens Tönnies, TönniesFleisch, and Wilhelm Leuze, Friedr. Dick. THE PIG THAT WANTS TO BE EATEN

Some of the most famous arguments and problems in philosophy are based around thought experiments. In The Pig That Wants to Be Eaten, Jullian Baggini has collected together 100 entertaining examples, 100 thought experiments: short scenarios which pose a problem in a vivid and concrete way, and invites the reader to think about possible answers for himself. Experiments cover identity, religion, art, ethics, language, knowledge and many more. Each thought experiment is set up in one or two paragraphs, in some cases with lirerary examples, followed by a few hundred words of thought-provoking discussion or even awkward questions.

From “Zeno´s Paradox” to “Groundhog Day”, via “The Pig that Wants to Be eaten” (so should you eat him?),  “Plato´s Cave”, “Minority Report” (is it right to punish people for what thery are going to do, but haven´t  yet done?), and an “American Werewolf in London” (how can we tell whether we are awake or dreaming?), this book makes philosophy not only mind-streching but also entertaining.

Baggini  offers us some intriguing questions about morality,  animal rights, culture, science, changes in eating habits…

This book is ideal for reading in a flight or long journey as it can be read in a couple of sittings.

I think I have the swine flu. I have the sudden urge to eat bacon.

I think I have swine flu: I ´ve broken out in rashers.

Apparently my mate´s got swine flu, I think he´s just telling porkies, though.

BACON AT THE MUSEO DEL PRADO

Which is the connection between animal carcasses and variations on The Portrait of pope Innocent X by Velazquez?  The painter Francis Bacon, who is the leading figure of avant-garde British art. These days a selection of 62 paintings by Bacon and archival objects can be seen at El Museo del Prado (Madrid)  from 03.02.2009 until 19.04.2009,  conmemorating the artist´s birth in 1909 and his death in Madrid on 28 April 1992.  These paintings are presented in various thematic sections corresponding to concepts of his work at different periods of his life. This allows us to enter into the unique wold of bacon´s artistic obsessions.: Animal, Zone, Apprehension, Crucifixion, Crisis, Archive, Portrait, Memorial, Epic and Late.

We will focus on Crucifixion because is an omnipresent element in his art. The figures and their relationships remain enigmatic, lacking any direct allusions to a religious theme but rather referring to the cruelty that human beings inflict on each other. Some pictures reflect his belief that without God, humans are subject to the same natural urges of violence, lust and fear as any other animal. There are specific references to the devasting events of Second World War. Crucifixion, 1933, Painting, 1946, Three studies for figures at the base for a Crucifixion, 1944, Figure with meat, 1954 and Three studies for Crucifixion, 1962 among others show the Crucifixion theme.  Only some are in this exhibion at El Museo del Prado.

Painting 1946 represents an old fashioned butcher´s shop with ceramic festoons on the wall and, looming up in the background, a carcass which -like the Rembrant carcass- The Slaughtered Oxin the Louvre is also a headless Crucifixion. The introduction of the motif of meat, the raw, bleeding flesh of the slaughterhouse and the butcher´s slab, a sight that affected Bacon like almost no other and was to become his personal metaphor of life and death.

Quite simply, he was fascinated by the sight of raw meat. In conversation with David Sylvester in October 1962 he explained: “I´ve always been very moved by pictures about slaughterhouses and meat. There´ve been extraordinary photographs which have been done of animals just being taken up before they were slaughtered; and the smell of death.I think these pictures were very much based on that kind of thing, which to me is very, very near this whole of the Crucifixion. I know for religious people, for Christinas, the Crucifixion has a totally different significance. But as a non-believer, it was just an act of man´s behaviour to another”.

In a further interview with Sylvester, in May 1966, Sylvester asked Bacon:”The image of sides of meat is obviously one that means a great deal to you”

When asked to comment on the difference between this theme and others, Bacon replied: “Well, of course, you´re working then about you´re own feelings and sensations, really. You might say almost nearer to a self portrait. You´re working on all sorts of very primitive feelings about behaviour and about the way life is…And of course, one has to remember as a painter that there is great beauty in the colour of meat.

David Sylvester asked: “Indeed, of course, Rembrant used a carcass (…)  hanging up almost as a stand-in for the Crucifixion, intentionally or not.

Bacon´s words: “I never think of that. And I never think of it as a carcass (…) even. The odd thing is that I don´t  think that carcass of meat is one of Rembrant´s great pictures, because I don´t think it´s very much like meat. It looks to me like a lump of wax hanging there. I don´t  think i t´s a great painting of meat. I don´t  know what the great paintings of meat are”.

Bacon´s feelings about meat -about the carcasses of animals, and also about human flesh- were ambivalent: they served as a solemn reminder of his own mortality.  Speaking  after completing the third tryptych in 1965 he simply stated: “Well, of course, we are meat, we are potential carcasses”.

Bacon was the painter of 20th-century man in all his fragility and violence. He focused on the futility of life, looking back to the classical authors whom he so admired  (The painters  Picasso, Velazquez, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, the writers Aeschylus´ The Oresteia, T.S.Eliot, Shakespeare, the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca  among others) and opening new  expressive directions to contemporary painters.
